After two visits to Siguenza, Spain and a daughter who teaches Spanish Ms McManis has become a fan of the country and the culture. On her second visit to Spain Ms McManis was able to visit several elementary schools in Siguenza, Spain and read her book, Ima and the Great Texas Ostrich Race. With her third picture book, Olé Cinco de Mayo, she features the Mexican holiday, a young boy named Pablo and his calf Rodeo in a riotous Cinco de Mayo misadventure. Her daughter, Meghan happily supplied the Spanish vocabulary along with a flan recipe and a brief history of the holiday. Ms. McManis has worked with Spanish speakers in her hometown of Conroe, Texas in ESL programs through her church and is the receptionist for the international advisor at Lone Star Montgomery College where she assists students from all over the globe as they venture into a new educational experience.
Ms. McManis has an MFA from Vermont College in Writing for Children and has a background as an elementary librarian. She is a charter member of the SCBWI Montgomery County Critique group and a member of SCBWI-Houston. In 2010 she won the Writer’s on Campus award from Montgomery College for her second picture book, “The Wild Texas Stampede“. She was featured on Houston Fox 26 News in 2013 with her picture book and musical about Ima Hogg of Texas.
For the last ten years Ms McManis has enjoyed traveling to schools in the U.S. and Spain to entertain children of all cultures with fun and exciting facts about Texas history.
